Math for Hats-online course

Since I do have a lot of teaching in my background, it shouldn’t be shocking that I’ve decided to set up some knitting classes in areas where I feel I have knowledge to share. I’d love to hear feedback if you have a class you’d love for me to teach. I’ll be doing workshops at yarn stores, but also online when I feel like they are suitable.

The first course is called Math for Hats.

Description:
This course is intended to help knitters at all levels adjust and add sizes to an existing pattern, or to start from scratch to design their own hat. We will discuss gauge, different levels of ease including when negative/positive ease are appropriate with a variety of stitch patterns, and how to use available standard sizing. We will look at all basic hat shapes including beanies and berets, and also discuss some accessories like earflaps and embellishments. Finally, we will look at the various construction methods and how they suit for the hat inside your head!

The online course will also feature support for your original hat design or help with adding a size to an existing pattern. This support will be provided either during the class timeframe, or up to 60 days following the conclusion of the course. This support includes answering questions, giving you my informed opinion about how you’re going about things, etc. This does NOT include tech editing of a written pattern.

Skills required:
-cast on
-knitting in the round
-basic increasing & decreasing
-beginning knitters–feel free to sign up!

What you get:
-2 scheduled group chats where I’ll be available to answer any questions
-Relevant handouts for each topic (downloadable)
-Design support or sizing support for one hat
-Forum for questions throughout the class

When:
The first class will run from February 3 to February 17th (2 week duration). Handouts/topics will be posted throughout the period, and materials will be available for sufficient time after the class conclusion so that you are able to save them all and continue using the forum for a while.

How:
We’ll be trying out the Ning setup to see if we like it! You’ll be invited to the forum on Day 1 of the class.

Cost:
This is my first time so I’m prepared to give you a super deal! Pre-register for the course by January 22nd and pay only $23.
EDITED January 15-The class is now full for round one! Clicking the button below will put you on the waiting list for round 2. The waiting-list/pre-registration cost is $34 through the end of the first class.

EDITED February 2012-Please view this page for current course information!

Space will be limited to 15 students for this first go round. I want to make sure I have enough time and energy for you all. Should the class fill up, I will start a waiting list for Round 2.

Did you notice the awesome perk of design support? I thought that was a rather cool idea. Hope to see you in the class, please spread the word to your buddies! DON’T FORGET TO CLICK ON THE BLUE BUTTON ABOVE :)

I’m pretty good with hats, don’t you think?

this sounds awesome! Would we need to meet online at a specific time?
I am knitting up the Diana for myself in taht pretty cranberry yearn you sold me and I think it is a little thinner than the green by yarn love. My gauge was pretty close, but I am still going to switch to a smaller set of needles. (I just did my first few rounds of the body.)
It’s things like this that make me think this class would be perfect, plus I have knitted my own simple design, but it didn’t quite come out the way I the one it was modeled after.

I just read your blog regarding your love of teaching and the upcoming class you are planning. Sounds great. Wondering if in the future you would be interested in doing something regarding color? Some people just have a natural knack for choosing colors that blend and contrast perfectly……not me. I would love to learn more about this. Is it something you can aquire with knowledge or is it a talent some are born with? Would love to hear what you think or if that may be something you may do in the future.

Sounds like an interesting idea Patty! I will definitely keep it in mind. I know I didn’t have any particular color training…I am just sort of drawn to some things…not always good I’m afraid :)
